Retire in Mexico

Can I retire in Mexico as a solution to the retirement crisis in America?
Retirement In Mexico
Retirement In Mexico
There is a solution to what is being called the "retirement crisis" in the U.S.A. In Baja California the popular roadside banners are calling it "The New American Dream - Retire in Mexico".  This trend in retirement is not without merit.  Americans that chose to retire in Mexico to save as much as 90% of what it costs to retire north of the border.

A luxury oceanfront condominium in San Diego costs about three million dollars with annual taxes of $3,000 to $5,000 compared to the expenses involved in retiring in a comparable oceanfront condo in Rosarito, just 20 miles south of the border, at less than $300,000 and less than $1,000 in annual taxes.  The saving and benefits do not end with the cost of retirement housing.  You can read more about the "Mexico Retirement Solution" here in a previous post, we made, Mexico Is The Best Place To Retire.

The retirement crisis statistics are alarming

About 80% of Americans are facing a crisis concerning retirement.  Almost 10% of Baby Boomers, (52- to 72-year-olds) claim that they have no plans for retirement.  A recent survey from GoBankingRates.com found over half of Americans have no more than $10,000 saved for retirement, and 1 in 3 have nothing saved at all. The National Institute on Retirement Security estimates the nation’s retirement savings gap is between $6.8 and $14 trillion.

According to an article in National Affairs - Is There A Retirement Crisis? - If you have followed the headlines in recent years on the question of Americans' retirement savings, you could be forgiven a bit of panic. "Our next big crisis will be a retirement crisis," read one headline in MarketWatch earlier this year. "The Greatest Retirement Crisis in American History," read another in Forbes. A study by the National Institute on Retirement Security put its warning in the form of a question: "The Retirement Savings Crisis: Is It Worse Than We Think?"

These predictions of doom typically point to one or another recent study prepared by important-sounding groups. The Center for Retirement Research at Boston College estimates that more than half of working-age households are at risk of having inadequate retirement resources. The National Institute on Retirement Security goes further, claiming that at least 65% of workers are saving less than required to meet their retirement income needs. The New America Foundation reports that, among middle-income retirees, "[f]ewer than half...have any form of pension income, and only a slim majority have any form of asset income."

The American Retirement Crisis
The American Retirement Crisis - Mauldin Economics
Here we see that 33% of Americans have no retirement savings at all; another 23% have less than $10,000; and a further 10% have less than $50,000. So that’s 66%, a full two-thirds of Americans, with either no savings at all or not enough to generate significant income. (If you have $50,000 and can pull out 4% a year without drawing down principal – which is hard to do – you’ll get something like $160 a month.) 2. You only put down 20% of the purchase price, thereby keeping the other 80% available for other investments and money-earning options.

3. The monthly mortgage is a tax deduction and if you claim your new condo as an investment property, you can deduct all expenses for personal use.

4. Inflation surveys suggest a consistent loss of 67% of each dollars purchasing power over each 30-year period.

5. Most important is your opportunity to buy and live in your dream condo with less money now and maintain plenty in reserve.

6. Timing being a crucial element in better decisions, all economic indices support our claim here at Lost Baja Discovered that the best time to finance your new condo is now.

Money Saved Is Money Earned
Money Saved Is Money Earned
The math made simple in the example below.  If you invest in your retirement condominium in Baja California with Lost Baja Discovered, your monthly payments will be less than if you were to pay rent in a humble urban community and much less than if you purchase instead of renting.  Comparable oceanfront condominium north of the border would be 10 times the expense, You can also deduct the revenue that you pay for your condo from your income tax as you can claim that your condo is investment property.
  • $250,000.00  condo purchase price
  •     $50,000.00  down payment  20%
  •        4.9%            interest rate
  •          360            month term
  •          $1326.82  monthly payment

* virtually all of your monthly payments are a tax deduction.
** if you claim your new condo purchase to be investment property 100% of your monthly payments, and all expenses incurred in your vacation time spent there is a tax deduction.

The Truth About Baja California

Baja California Whale Watching
Baja California Whale Watching
The Mexican government and society have a name for the USA that I found to be ironic however it makes sense if you think about it like a Mexican would.  The geography north of the Line or "Linea" (the border) is called the Frontier.  When I first heard this term I was amused as if the USA is considered by Mexicans as the wild west, a land that was as foreign as foreign can be.  The irony is that for an American the country of Mexico is exactly that - a frontier of sorts. The culture alone is something so special that by itself it is a frontier.

Whale watching from the
Pacific bluffs
The coastlines and beaches of the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez are spectacular and are practically deserted, unspoiled, indifferent to southern California Coast due to the over the development and congestion or urbanization.  There are so many unique characteristics to the landscapes and as well the architecture of the quaint fishing villages and small towns that the feeling is not unlike being in a different time let alone a different place.

Even in the often miss-represented border town of Tijuana there are festive squares that adorn a Spanish flavor and some of the most sensational Art Deco Architecture that is all over the remnants of Tijuana's Golden Era a century ago when it was the most cherished getaway for the rich and famous only second to Mote Carlo.

Excursions to sport fish or whales watching have become a great tourist attraction for Baja however from the shoreline just a hundred feet or less, the sensational migration of whales is quite a show.  There wine country of the Valley of Guadalupe is exceptionally wonderful for sophisticated touring. The Peurto Nuevo fishing village where lobsters are served and partying is abound in the many restaurants is as well a tourist attraction not to be overlooked.

The famous wineries of the
Valley of Guadalupe

So considering this brief description of what Baja California is all about, it would be reasonable for Americans from north of the border to consider Baja California the "Frontier".  The Baja California Experience is like something out of a wonderful dream for the North Americans.  It is not something that can easily be expressed - it is a feeling that can only realized by emotion.
