| Retiring in Mexico - the New American Dream |
In the year 2000 less than 500,000 Americans were living in Mexico. As of 2018, the ex-patriot population more than doubled to over 1.2 million, nearly half of them retirees. Oddly enough, the government of the United States apparently is not keeping track of this demographic statistic however the Mexican Government is very keen on this trend and has an authoritative sense of the data, more importantly the revenue that streams into the Mexican economy. Over 600,000 homes in Mexico are owned by Americans as of 2018, which is creating an ever-increasing housing boom in some of Mexico's more pristine markets, the places that Mexicans call "Real Mexico" the real Mexico.

Besides the real estate value of the cost of living in Mexico is much lower than in the USA. One factor in this equation is the current exchange rate, which is approximately 20 pesos to 1 dollar, almost double from 2016.
Dinning in Mexico's restaurants is extremely attractive not only because there is real value, there are sensational establishments offering traditional Mexican food and international cuisine, such as Italian, Chinese, and yes American food. Supermarkets similar to the big chains in the USA are very price friendly, which creates an easy to manage budget.
Perhaps the best reason so many Americans are retiring in Baja California is because of its proximity. Rosarito's fabulous retirement condominiums are just 30 minutes south of the border.
